Assignment 2 Communication App: Proloquo2Go - Full AAC solution with over 7000 symbols, natural sounding voices, automatic conjugation, and more. Several of the students that I work with are beginning to explore this as an alternative to their more bulky (and expensive) communication device.
Talking Tom Cat - While this is not a direct communication app I use it as such as do many of the speech and language pathologists that I work with. The "cat" repeats everything you say in a higher pitched voice. This is great to get kids to repeat words and facilitate engagement. And it is just plain fun!! There are several more animals but Tommy and Larry the Bird are my favorites.
Reading/Writing Apps: Stories2Learn Create personalized stories using photos, text and audio messages. We have already been using this in the CDS classroom that I work in. Students are creating personalized stories about curricular content they are studying
ABC Pocket Phonic This is an early reading app that introduced letter sounds and letter writing. I will use this as a fine motor/writing activity while the students have to repeat the sounds and words. It has great feedback for the child/student with kids cheering when they get the writing component correct.
Word Magic This is an early reading app emphasizing letter identification to complete simple site words. I will have kids practice their reading and writing skills when they are in different postures and adaptive equipment in the classroom
Mee Genius This is a story telling app. You can download various books at the "bookstore" or use one of the featured books already present. You have the option of having the child read the book themselves or the book will read it for them. The cursor moves over each word so the child/student can have a visual cue to the word being spoken. They can forward the page by themselves or it can be set to automatic advance the book as well. Again a great app I set up with kids when the are up in adaptive equipment in the classroom or when they have "free time" on the iPad.
Organizational Apps: Time Timer Improves time management with a visual depiction of time, and optional audible and vibrate signals for iPhone. This provides great visual and auditory feedback when a time limit needs to be placed on an activity.
My Homework- This is a calendar specific to students. This would become a student’s “assignment notebook” so to speak.
Math Apps: Kid Calc 7 in 1 Math Fun- App that can tailor to specific age between 2 -10 years. I often use apps during my PT sessions to continue to encourage the “academic” goals that are the IEP especially in the areas of math; language and reading.
Math Drills Add,-,X, divide facts separate or combined. Again I like to have several different app options in each curricular area to reinforce during my motor sessions.
Games/Relaxation/Fidget Apps (we like to call them) Koi Pond I use this as a “relaxation” or fidget app so to speak. The child/student touched the iPad and it sounds like they are splashing the water trying to touch fish. The kids love it.
Tangrams This is a puzzle app that I use quite frequently. It assists in getting a child to become comfortable in navigating the touch screen of the iPad while also working on visual motor skills.
ItsyBitsy Spider This is a fun music app that again helps the child/student learn how to navigate the touch screen of the iPad. It is a popular childhood song and readily engages the student. They also have the Wheels on the Bus. The students have to use the touch screen to advance the screen; facilitate actions on the screen - i.e. spider crawling up the web; wipers of the bus go back and forth, etc. The Wheels on the Bus app also has the capability of being sung in several languages (with just a touch to change the setting) which is great in some of the bilingual schools that I work in...
Magnetic ABC This is just a great app with many options for the kids to use. Remember the magnetic alphabet we all had as kids and played with on the refrigerator?? Well this app just expands that same concept with many different types of icons; letter - capital and small; numbers; seasonal; etc that a child can "drag" and put on the "board". There is a wheel that rotates to all the different pages.
Personal Apps: Drop Box This is a great and handy app. I used it extensively with my niece over the summer as we wrote our grant proposal together. It was invaluable in being able to share documents during the editing process of those documents during the class. I continue to use it for work for my documentation and billing so I don't always have to have my laptop with me.
Clinometer HD My husband loves this app especially while we are camping and have to level the camp stove!!!
Number Cruncher This is a fun and addicting app....my husband and I were up to the wee hours of the morning when we were camping trying to outdo each other. In a nutshell all you have to do is sequence numbers. I have used this will my students as well to improve their counting skills.
Google Earth Self explanatory - google earth is just a great tool and lots of fun for geography; social studies, etc.
Dotti’s Food Score I use this to manage my Weight Watcher point program....VERY handy tool.
Star Walk This is a great app for science; astronomy. At any given time you can raise your iPad up and can see where the moon; sun; and any constellation, nebula, etc are. We love this when we go camping with the kids but I could see how cool it would be in a science class!!
